MOMMY BLOG: STAGE 2 HOMEMADE BABY FOOD RECIPES

I tried these yummy baby food recipes. I am surprised they were so easy to make! I had them all done in about an hour. They are super nutritious and my son tried a couple and he liked them all #winning.

Banana, Raspberry and Oats Baby Food

I have to admit, this recipe in particular was the reason why I made all the other ones. I found this recipe from the Happy Baby Organics website. I edited quantities based on what I know my son loves and what flavors he prefers.

 Ingredients:
1 small package of raspberries

3 1/2 tsp of oats
2 bananas

*Add everything to a blender and blend until you reach the desired consistency.

Blueberry, Apples & Oats Baby Food

I taste all of these recipes before I give them to my son, and I have to say, this one is my favorite! Another Happy Baby Organics recipe.

Ingredients
1 cup of Blueberries
2 Apples
4 tsp oats

*Add everything to blender and blend until you reach desired consistency.

Broccoli, Pears and Peas Baby Food

This is a nutrition punch! So much good stuff all together. This is the least favorite of my son, since he hates green veggies but I put extra pears to mask the taste of the peas and the broccoli. This is also a Happy Baby Organics recipe.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup peas
1 cup broccoli
2 pears

*Add everything to a blender with 2 tbsp of water and blend until you reach desired consistency.

Apples, Mint and Ricotta Cheese Baby Food

This recipe is from "Little Foodie" by Michelle Oliver cookbook. For this, if you plan to freeze. blend apples and mint together and freeze. Add ricotta before serving.

Ingredients:
I did not add cheese to this since I plan on freezing.
2 apples
3 mint leaves
2 tbsp ricotta cheese

*Add everything to blender and blend until you reach desired consistency. IF YOU PLAN TO FREEZE DO NOT ADD CHEESE. ADD IT BEFORE SERVING.

I hope you enjoy these recipes. If you have other yummy recipes, leave a comment below and let me know. I am always searching for new recipes for my very picky eater.

CARTER'S HAUL FOR BOY (12 MONTHS)

I had to share these cute outfits I got for my son at Carter's two weeks ago.

The main reason I went shopping was because I was in desperate need of some pajamas for my son. How cute are these. They are footsie pajamas with silicone grips on the bottom so babies can have more grip when they walk. We call our son "monkey" so I had to buy monkey pajamas!

How cute is this little octopus?

As my son gets older, it is getting harder to find footsie pajamas that do not have buttons, since my husband struggles every single time with them, so we like the zipper ones. Because it was so hard to find more zipper pajamas I got him big boy pajamas. Meaning it was a shirt and pant set. He looks so incredibly cute on these!

For the summer I though two rompers would be great to add to his collection. Again, monkey themed and I didn't realize until I was writing this blog that the blue romper is very similar to the dump truck set I got him for his 9 month old haul. Still love it so much!

I love this outfit! The chameleon and cargo pants look so cute on my son. He looks like a big boy. It is such a funky style and I feel like black really suits him.
I also got him the blue stripped shorts and a set of shorts and polo. With the weather starting to get so hot, these would be great for going out but keeping him cool!

Again, Carter's is always running all kinds of promotions and sales, so you will always find great deals there.

*Disclaimer- I bought everything on this haul. It is not a sponsored post and I do not get paid by anybody to talk nicely or badly about a brand or store. These are my opinions about things I buy for me and my family.

PEAR & CLOVES BABY FOOD RECIPE

I have been blessed with an extremely picky eater. What does that mean? I have to find very creative ways to hide foods my son will not eat with very flavorful foods that he loves. This is why I love this recipe. It is so good, I would eat it. The best thing, my son loves this baby food. I make this baby food puree every week because I use it to hide these foods: peas, spinach, cottage cheese and cauliflower. Now, let's just say I wouldn't mix this with those foods for myself, but for some reason, my son will eat those foods if they are drowned by this puree. I am currently trying to mask chicken with this...unsuccessfully... but I am thinking I might cook the chicken on pear glaze and see if he might eat it. I will let you know. Anyways, here is the recipe. I hope you (or your little one) enjoys it!

Ingredients:
4 pears
1/8 ground cloves

Diretions:
Peel and core the pears. I use very ripe pears, since they are the sweetest. Cut pears in 1 in cubes. On a deep pot put pears and fill with about 1 inch of water. Boil them on medium high heat until they are tender and clear. Let them cool completely. Once completely cooled, add ground cloves and puree them to the desired consistency. You can freeze the puree on ice cube trays and keep frozen for about 3 months.

*You can use a food processor for the puree. I use my KitchenAid Fruit and Vegetable Strainer since it makes a chunkier baby food. My son is 10 months old so he likes very chunky purees. It also helps with masking chunkier foods.

I found this recipe on "Little Foodie: Baby Food Recipes for Babies and Toddlers with Taste" recipe book but updated the amount of ground cloves since it was too much in my opinion. If you want to get this book you can buy it here.

If you have a picky eater, like I do, please leave a comment and let me know what have you tried and what works for you.

MOMMY BLOG: THE VERY LAST LATCH

This year was my first official Mother's Day! As my present, my son woke up at 4:45 am! Happy Mother's Day to you, Frances. My husband was nice enough to take care of him until 7 am, then he brought him to my bed. Up until that day, I had nursed him in the morning, while we snuggled together. As I laid in bed with my son happily nursing, almost falling asleep from a milk induced coma, I started to cry a bit. Not because it was Mother's Day but because I knew that was the last time I was going to nurse my son. It was going to be the last time he would drift to sleep while still latched. The last time I would feed him with my body. The very last latch! A world of emotions came pouring down! I felt so grateful I was able to breastfeed for as long as I did. I only planned to do so for 6 months and was able to nurse him for 9 1/2 months! Before having him, I didn't know the incredible connection you have with your child when you breastfeed. I took a couple of pictures of that last nursing session. Time stood still and I held to that moment for as long as I could. And then it happened, he fell completely asleep and unlatched for the very last time!

Even as a write this, tears are pouring down. I get so emotional about it, although I know it was time for us to move forward. The next morning, my son woke up and my husband went to get him as I went downstairs and made a bottle for him. I gave him the bottle on our bed, snuggled like always, the only difference was the bottle. He was happy and content and drifted to sleep without even noticing momma was no longer nursing him. And so life kept going. He is still a happy boy. He still looks for me for comfort. He still snuggles for two hours in the morning on my bed. Nothing has changed in his eyes. For that I am grateful. I was so worried that he was not going to adjust but he did, he was ready to wean.

As for me, I am still dealing with the aftermath of not nursing anymore. I had some engorgement for a couple of days but now it is bearable. Life is the same. Emotions have settled down and I am happy again. I do miss nursing but at the same time, I am happy I have a bit more flexibility. Breastfeeding was an amazing experience. At the beginning I struggled with low milk supply, soreness, bleeding, latch problems and vasospasms, but I am so happy I powered through! I gave my son a wonderful gift, and I feel he, in return, gave me the satisfaction that I did it. Not all women are as lucky as I am to nurse their babies. Some struggle so much they have to stop and formula feed (which is also totally fine). For any woman who is struggling with nursing, if you really want to do it, power through, don't give up and surround yourself with a supporting group. That's what I did. I had my husband who was incredibly supportive and an amazing friend who gave me the strength to keep on going and encouraged me. She listened and gave me her advise. I even sent her pictures to see if she could tell me what was going on with my latch and my ladies... I am so grateful for her and for my support group!

If I have another baby, I will most certainly endure all of this again. It was so worth it! My son thrived and with every pound he gained I felt prouder because I know that was 100% me! With every roll of fat he had, with every milestone he reached, I felt like a super mom! Now things are a bit different but also the same. Different because I have to mix formula and feed him a bottle but they are the same because his attitude towards his mommy and our relationship is the same.

I hope by sharing my journey, some of you felt comfort in knowing that you are not alone. That it is a very draining yet satisfying experience. If you are nursing your baby, you go momma! Pat yourself in the back, because it is not easy! If you are about to wean, you can do it, and give yourself time to get used to it. Don't rush it. I am happy with my approach.

Stay strong!

IT'S JUST A HEMANGIOMA, GET OVER IT!

I have been debating for almost eight months on weather or not to address the very white elephant in the room, my son's hemangiomas. After months of this internal struggle, I've decided to actually write about it for one reason, to educate people about them.

So let's begin with what is a hemangioma? A hemangioma, by Mayo Clinic's definition is a birthmark that most commonly appears as a rubbery, bright red nodule of extra blood vessels in the skin*. They are known to occur very early in pregnancy, and they are basically a cluster of extra blood vessels, that's what gives them that very bright red appearance. They do not hurt, but in some cases, can interfere with breathing, vision or feeding, depending on where they are located. Most of them fade with time (most of them gone by the time a child reaches 5 years old), although in some cases there is minimal discoloration at the site.

My son's hemangiomas are located on his bottom lip and his neck. They weren't visible at birth, but started to become visible when he was about 7 days old. We took him to a Pediatric Dermatologist who prescribed medication to treat them. Most hemangiomas do not require medication, but in my son's case, it did for several reasons. The first one being that his biggest hemangioma, the one on his lip, was big enough to interfere with breastfeeding/bottle feeding. If it would have burst, it would have been incredibly difficult to heal and feeding him would have been very hard. The second reason was that by having two hemangiomas so close together and aligned, there was a chance that he could have a third hemangioma on the inside of his throat. That third possible hemangioma could have grown and potentially block his airways. Thanks to many prayers from our family, that was not the case.

Now that I've addressed what a hemangioma is, I want to address the thing we, as parents of a child with an hemangioma, have to deal with on a daily basis. I remember when we were at the dermatologist office, he warned us about something. He said, and I quote, "when you have a child with a visible hemangioma, everyone and their brother will have something to say about it. Everyone knows everything there is to know about it, and they will be very vocal about it, so learn to mute them". At the moment I did not quite grasp what he was saying. Now that my son is 8 months old, I so get it.

I know that most people come from a place of love and good intentions when they make a comment about it. Most of the time we hear "his birthmark is so cute", "you can barely see it" or "I wouldn't worry about it". Some people, with a smaller than usual filter in their tongue, have said something along the lines of "what is wrong with your son's lip". Very few IDIOTS, have said "you know, that mark is caused by you giving him a pacifier" or "was it your fault?". My husband and I have learned with time to tune them out.

To be quite honest, most of the time, I don't even notice my son's mark. I am with him 24/7 so I am so used to it by now, I just don't see it. But what gets me every time someone makes a nice, not so nice or plain uneducated remark, is that my heart breaks a little for my little man. Not because I think he has a disability, which he does not, or because it looks ugly, but because it makes me realize, that it is still there and it is the first thing people see when they see my son. They notice that first, instead of what a happy little boy he is, how beautiful his almond blue eyes are, or his incredible huge smile. I know that in three years time, we will not be able to see where his hemangiomas where. They will be a faint memory in us but not in him.

We could edit his pictures if we wanted. Erase any evidence that he has a mark on his face. After all, he will not remember it. We could spare us a world of questions and stupid comments from people that don't know any better. But we do not want to do this. I do not want to teach my son that he needs to change his appearance in order to fit in. I hope that when he grows up and sees his baby pictures, he realizes that we loved him no matter what and accepted his mark. I think it is the most beautiful little lip in this whole world. I don't care that he is different, as a matter of fact, I have embraced it. One day, when he is a grown man, hopefully he will know that beauty comes in every shape and form, and that you should judge people for who they are and their character and not by how they look.

Until my son's hemangioma fades, I will try to educate those who are truly curious about his mark, and to all the idiots that have a not so nice comment, I will just ignore them.

MOMMY BLOG: WEANING WEEK 11

Hi there! This will probably be my last weaning blog before completely weaning my son! Like last week I am only nursing my son once a day, in the morning. Not much has changed this week. My body is used to this new schedule and so is my son! I have decided to extend this schedule for at least a couple of weeks, since I (mommy not baby) are not ready to stop breastfeeding.

So, this is a short one! I have loved nursing my son, something I did not expect to happen. I only planned to nurse him for 6 months but here I am, my son is 8 months old and I am just not ready to give up that relationship just yet.

There is something so special about breastfeeding for a mother and her son. For me, I just love seeing him drift off and fall asleep. Look at his long eyelashes while he nurses. He also puts his hand on my face while he nurses, which tugs at my heart! He is such an energetic boy and so independent, except when he nurses, when all he wants is mommy and cuddles. I just cannot let go of that at the moment.

Until I can prepare myself to let go of that, I will keep nursing him in the mornings, cuddle for a couple of hours after that and make this bond even stronger.

Hugs, Frances

MOMMY BLOG: WEANING WEEK 10

Hello there! Long time no bloggie! I had my father in law visiting this weekend so I didn't post a blog on Friday! But here we are, Weaning Week 10!

This week was surprisingly good. I am now only nursing my son once a day, in the morning when he wakes up. He usually wakes up around 6-6:30 am and I let him nurse for as long as he wants! I am nursing him on both breasts since if I do not do this I will be engorged by the evening and it is quite painful! I have decided to keep nursing him in the morning for more time, probably until 9-10 months. I just really enjoy our morning routine and it is so special to me. After he nurses he falls asleep with me in bed and we cuddle until 9:00am when we wake up and go downstairs for breakfast.

I am comfortable with this routine.

One thing to mention, remember when I said that my son started not wanting to nurse at around 6 months and it was a battle. We now have learned that he is lip tied, which may have something to do with the lack of patience to nurse. I am sad to have learned this, because it was a battle that I thought was my fault. Now I know that it was probably hard for him to nurse. We are going to see a specialist soon to see if he needs to be revised. That is another reason why I want to keep nursing him, since I've read it helps with the pain management after the procedure.

My heart is breaking a little bit for my son after finding out that it might have been hard for him to nurse. I experienced pain (mild) after 1 month of nursing. The first month it was excruciating pain. Now I know, it was all due to a mild poor latch. So, if you are experiencing any kind of pain while nursing or your baby is thrashing while nursing, don't just check for a tongue tie, also check for a lip tie! AND try too see a pediatric dentist that specializes on tongue and lip ties (not all of them do). Pediatricians sometimes are not educated enough on this matter.

Until next time!

Hugs,
Frances

MOMMY BLOG: CARTERS HAUL (BOY)

This will be a short one but I needed to share how cute these outfits are!!!

So my little baby boy, which is 8 months old is wearing 9 month old and 12 month old clothes! One day I was dressing him and every piece of clothing he had was too tight! So I had to go to do some baby clothes shopping. Ugh, YEAH RIGHT!! I love shopping for him.

I have a Carter's really close by so me and my husband went together to pick up a couple of things! I have to say, one thing I love about this store is that they are always running specials, promotions and their sale rack is pretty nice! I wanted to get a couple of onesies, pajamas, and several outfits for him. I have to say, their pajama selection was not good. We couldn't find one single footsie pajama that we liked. They had lots of "pajamas" with no feet but since my son loves to sleep in a very cold room that will not work for him.

Here are a couple of pictures of the outfits we got him!

Onesies
We got him this set of five onesies! These are 12 month old size because for some reason every time I buy Carter's onesies they seem to fit but the second I wash them they shrink. It happened to us last time that we bought him 9 month old onesies and washed them and he got to wear them like twice because he outgrew them. So, something to keep an eye on... It only happens with the onesies though, shirts and pants we've never had an issue.  I adore these colors, the bright ones compliment his hair and I don't know if you can tell but the blue one has little crabs on it! How cute is that!!!!!??? I also love hammer head sharks and the gray onesie has yellow hammer heads! #adorable

These two outfits are my favorite ones! The little overall is so cute. His nursery is space themed so I had to get it for him. It looks so cute on him and with the warmer weather it will be perfect to chill around. The little pant and shirt outfit was picked by my husband and I am dying over here with it! How preppy it is! I think this would look so cute to go out in Annapolis! lol! The salmon color looks so cute on him and the shorts are just too cute! By the way, I will say cute on this blog a million times, but hey, if it is I have to say it!

These two outfits, the fire truck and the dump truck I got because I love to put pants on my son that have something on the butt. He crawls with his butt up and he just looks incredibly adorable with them on! They are super soft and comfortable. These also shrink when they are washed but not as much as the normal onesies.

My husband dresses so often on plaid long sleeve shirts and jeans that I wanted to dress my son to look like his papa! The jeans are super comfy. They fit a little bit long but I just roll the legs and it is fine.

Lastly, you have to dress your little man in camo! Come on! How cute it this?! The little overall is super soft! and the little shirt is just a normal plain cotton shirt! I also use the jeans from the previous outfit with the camo shirt! He looks like a little man when he is wearing it!

Anyways, if you have a baby, I suggest you keep an eye on Carter's and OshKosh because they are always running some kind of sale and you can get a lot for your buck! I also got some socks for my son and the whole purchase wasn't even 80 bucks! Thank God I have a boy and not a girl because then we would have definitely gone broke! :)

Anyways, let me know in the comments what is your favorite baby clothes store!

Hugs
Frances

MOMMY BLOG: WEANING WEEK 8 & 9

Week 8 & 9! Oh my! So much to say!! I didn't write a blog post for Week 8 because it was pretty much the same as Week 7. It was smooth sailing and my son was so adjusted to the schedule I didn't want to write a blog that said: same as last week, have a good one!!!

Now, Week 9!! WHAT A WEEK THAT WAS!!! My little one has had a couple of colds, but they were very mild! Last week he got his first very big cold and guys, let me tell you, it was bad. When I say it was bad, it was more like, soul crushing, sleep deprived, snotty fuzzy bundle of AWFUL!

I replace a nursing session usually on Mondays. I picked the bedtime nursing as the one I was going to replace. It was a very tough decision but I picked the bedtime feeding because I enjoy the morning feeding the most. The bedtime feeding was getting to be too much. My son would thrash during the whole feeding, he started biting and it was just so frustrating that it was taking all the magic away from nursing him. I wasn't looking forward to it. Not only that, I loved nursing him to sleep but because he was fuzzing so much while feeding, I had to cut them shorter and he was still awake and upset so I had to rock him for so long to get him to sleep or let him cry too long. Because of all of this, I decided to replace that feeding with a bottle. Monday came and I noticed after nursing my son in the morning that he wanted to nurse again after an hour had passed. I gave him a bottle with a couple of ounces and gave him extra cuddles. This kept happening all day long. By the end of the day I suspected that something was brewing and maybe he was either going through a growth spurt or he was getting ill. I decided to wait and see what was going on so I nursed him that night and put him to bed. My instinct was right!! After 30 minutes, he woke up crying. We settled him and 30 mins later he woke up crying again. He was so stuffy and he just couldn't breathe. That was waking him up. To make the story short, he cried all night. He finally went to bed at 3 am and woke up at 6. The rest of the week was the same. No sleep, fuzzy, snotty baby. It was so hard to see him like this and I just kept nursing him in the morning and in the afternoon the rest of the week so he could get some antibodies from me.

Now, Sunday I finally was able to replace the last feeding for a bottle and it went fine. I didn't feel engorged this morning so hopefully this week will go smoothly. I have to say, I love nursing my son in the morning!!!! My husband usually picks him up around 6 am and brings him to our bed. I lay with my son and nurse him while cuddling. I let him nurse for as long as he wants and he always falls asleep cuddling with me. We stay like this until 9 am when we wake up and get ready for our day. It is the most special time of the day, and the one I love the most. I have to admit, I am not sure if I want to give that one up just yet. Maybe I will take longer to stop nursing just so I can enjoy the extra cuddles I get from my baby boy!!!! I will update you next week!!!

Hugs,
Frances

MOMMY BLOG: 5 THINGS I WISH I HAD WHEN MY SON WAS BORN

When I found out I was pregnant I was so excited to start planning and buying things for my baby. I didn't have too many friends that had babies, but I had a handful that did. Although they were very helpful on pointing out a bunch of things I needed, I feel like I missed a bunch of things that I didn't get that looking back on it now, would have saved me a lot of work, pain or valuable and needed zzzz's.

Here I have gathered a list of the 5 things I wish I had gotten for when my son was born:

Co-Sleeper (Arms Reach Mini Arc Co Sleeper)

When we found out we were expecting a very good friend of mine lend us a bassinet to use for our son. He ended up being a very light sleeper and it was kind of hard to put him down in the bassinet without waking him up. With a co sleeper I would have been able to just slide him there and it would have been so much easier to nurse him while laying down. This is the one I liked the best and if we have another baby it will be the one I will purchase

Room thermometer (The Gro Company Gro-Egg Room Thermometer)

This would have saved us so much pain and it would have helped us to sleep so much more. We had a summer baby, so we had our A/C on when we brought him home. Some nights he would sleep well and some nights he would wake up every 30 minutes. There was no visible pattern to his wakings. At 4 months we moved our son to his own bedroom and our son started sleeping through the night. Sometimes he would wake up at 4 am to nurse but it was heaven. We went to Puerto Rico to visit my family and he kept sleeping wonderfully. After we came back home it all went to hell. He started waking up every 2 hours and sometimes every hour. We were so sleep deprived it was terrible. Then my husband bought this room thermometer. By then it was winter and we had our heater on. He bought the thermometer because our house would get really cold on the first floor but it would be a totally different temperature on the third floor where our son slept. So we started monitoring the temperature and noticed that every time the heater would kick in, he would wake up. That's when it all made sense. Our son loved to sleep in a very, VERY cold room. He slept through the night when it was between 65-67 degrees. I wish we had this from the beginning. We would have slept a whole lot more!

Changing Table (Badger Basket Modern Changing Table)

Our house has 3 stories. The first floor is our living area, second floor is our master suite and the third floor is the rest of the bedrooms and bathrooms. The first couple of months we had our son on the "living room" of our master suite. It was handy to have him there, since we didn't want to go up and down the stairs. I refused to buy a changing table in the beginning because I thought I didn't need it. A friend of mine told me that she never used hers and that it was a waste of money, so I listened to her. I regretted not having one and ended up buying one a week after my son was born. They are absolutely necessary. It is nice to not have to bend on the floor or put your baby with a poopy diaper on your bed, WHERE YOU SLEEP. I wish we would have bought three though, one for every floor on our house. This is the changing table we bought and I love it!

Nose Frida

Ok, lets be honest. The concept of this product is gross as hell! I didn't even put it on my registry, even though it was recommended by every single mom I knew. At my baby shower, a very experienced mom gave it to me and said to trust her when she said it was the best nasal aspirator out there. For months I didn't want to use it... it was so gross in my opinion, but after struggling with a bulb aspirator with my son for months (his nose is always runny) I decided to give it a try! Oh my gosh, what a game changer! This is the best product out there, hands down!

Crib Soother (Baby Einstein Sea Dreams Soother)

When we transitioned our baby to his crib he would cry and cry all night. As a parent, you do not want to see your child cry. We had to do the Cry It Out method, which is very heartbreaking. We tried every other way to get our son to sleep and nothing worked. So, we decided to give it a try. I know that the "CIO" method is very controversial and I understand it is not for everyone, but for us, we were at the end of our rope. Anyways, our son cried so much the first night, we did some research on how to soothe him and stumbled across an article that mentioned this, so we immediately bought it. It helped so much! Our son still cried a bit but it was so much less. He would focus on the soother and drift to sleep pretty quickly. We took this with us to Puerto Rico to visit my parents and it worked like a charm. I wish I would have bought it earlier.

If we decide to have another baby these are a few of the things that really made a difference with us. There are a whole lot of things you should have handy, but I feel nobody talked about these, when in my opinion they should!

MOMMY BLOG: WEANING WEEK 7

So here we are! Week 7 of weaning. This week I replaced the middle of the day nursing for a bottle. This is the last nursing session during the day. I am now breastfeeding twice a day, in the morning when my son wakes up and at night before he goes to bed.

I was a little bit surprised because I was expecting to feel more uncomfortable, since I am waiting 12 hours between nursing sessions, but to tell you the truth, it wasn't that bad. I felt a little bit of pressure but no pain whatsoever. I did nurse one of the days four times because my son had a low grade fever from teething and I decided to give him a boost of anti-bodies. I thought the next day I was going to pay the price but it was not bad at all.

My son has continued to thrive, and doesn't seem to mind the bottle at all. It is quite nice to see him enjoy having daddy feed him. It is crazy how fast they learn. Now when I am making his bottle if he sees me go get the powder formula he starts getting excited because he knows he is going to eat soon. Update on him, he is now crawling completely and started grabbing the edge of our furniture and using it to stand up. He also does this while he is in his crib, which is kind of scary because I am worried he will fall, but I guess this is supposed to happen and it is a developmental milestone.

As for me, I didn't feel sad or felt weepy at all. I guess my hormones are slowly normalizing and not crashing like before, which has helped with my PPD. I hope that it continues to be this way. Next week I will follow the same schedule of nursing him in the morning at 7 am and in the afternoon at 7 pm. If you want to read about week 6 of weaning, click here to check it out! Until next week! Have a lovely week!!!

MOMMY BLOG: WEANING WEEK 6

Hi everyone!

This week went smoothly with the nursing. My little one is still teething. His bottom right tooth emerged last Wednesday and yesterday his bottom left tooth emerged. Since they are still breaking through the gum, he is still quite miserable. This is making for sleepless nights...sigh! Hopefully they will fully emerge in the next week or so and we will be back to normal! He has been clingy but doesn't seem to want to nurse more often.

Anyways, this week's schedule was pretty much the same. He nursed three times a day. I started the next weaning for Week 7 today by substituting the middle of the day feeding. I was a little bit sad, again, when I did this, but it seems my boy is super fine with it. He is enjoying drinking from a bottle and now is starting to feed himself. He still needs some help, but he is pretty independent and learns pretty fast! He is also eating a lot more solids, and seems to be liking the trying new foods!!! You can see what solids I introduced first and a couple of homemade baby food recipes here. I will be posting a 6-8 month old baby food recipes later this week, so stay tuned.

I haven't felt engorged for a while. My body seems to understand the routine and it is adjusting pretty well. I do feel sad when I replace another nursing session but I know in the end we will be happier. I've nursed him longer than I planned (I only planned to nurse him for 6 months) and I love the amazing bond we created!! I struggled so much in the beginning with nursing! I was so sore, bleeding and my baby struggled to gain weight. My milk took a whole week to come in, and my son lost a lot of weight because of that. When he was born he weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces, the day we took him home from the hospital he weighed 7 pounds 6 oz and two days later he weighed only 7 pounds. It was definitely stressful, but I am so glad I powered through and did not give up! I am proud of myself for doing that!

Anyways, let's see how this week goes! Until next time!

MOMMY BLOG: 4-6 MONTH OLD HOMEMADE BABY FOOD

Even before getting pregnant with my little one, I knew I wanted to make him homemade baby food. I love to cook, the kitchen is where I feel the happiest, so there was no question about it for me. When I got pregnant, my hubby bought me a Kitchen Aid attachment that helps make baby food. I still haven't used it, since it makes for more chunkier baby food, but once I start making more complex recipes I will definitely use it! Brownie points for dear husband for knowing me so well.

This is what works for me and my son. I am not a pediatrician or a nutritionist. You should always consult with your doctor before introducing solids to your baby. That's what I did. He should give you the ok to start them and what foods to introduce first.

Anyways, at four months of age, little hungry baby seemed like he was always starving, even though I was nursing every 2 hours, so our pediatrician suggested we start introducing solids! Oh man! What a happy baby he was! He had been eyeballing our spoons for almost a month and wanted to try everything we were eating. Needless to say, he was ready!

A good way to start is with bland foods. Below you will find a list of foods that are appropriate for 4-6 month olds. I got this list from Momtastic.com and corroborated it with our pediatrician.

Fruits

Apples
Avocado
Banana
Pear

Vegetables

Beans (green)
Sweet Potato
Butternut Squash

Grains

Barley
Oatmeal
Rice

The very first food I introduced was rice cereal. I mixed one tablespoon of cereal with 5 tablespoons of breast milk. It was VERY watery, but you want it this way. You don't want to introduce something that is too different from the consistency of milk. Every time I gave my son a new food, I fed it to him in the morning (never in the afternoon) so I could keep an eye on him in case he developed an allergy and I fed him the same food for three days in a row. I introduced one food at a time and I only gave him about a tablespoon of baby food. All you want to do for the first month is introduce food, not make him feel full. Also, try giving solids in between two nursing or bottles. You don't want your baby too full or too hungry. Prepare for a mess, by the way.

Cooking instructions:

As a rule of thumb, fruits you want to boil (Except bananas and avocados, which can be feed without being cooked), green vegetables you want to steam and "starchy" vegetables you want to roast. After you make the baby fppd, you can use these trays to freeze it. Once it is frozen you can transfer it to zip lock bags and you can keep it for about three months.

Here are a couple of very simple homemade baby food recipes:

Apple Baby Food and Pear Baby Food

Apple and Pear Baby Food (Apples left, pears right)

Peel and core two apples (any kind you want). Cube the apples and add them to a pot with enough water to fill the bottom of the pot. Boil until they are tender and look a little bit clear. They will start smelling like syrup or very sugary, that's when you know they are done. Drain them but keep the water for later. On a food processor to blend the apples. Usually they are pretty runny but you can add a couple of tablespoons of the water you saved from cooking until you reach the desired consistency.  Do the same for pears. Now that my son is 7 months old, pears are his absolute favorite!!!

Avocado Baby Food & Banana Baby Food

Avocado baby food
Peel and core an avocado. Cube it. For older babies you can just smash with a fork and feed it to the baby, but for a four month old or if this is one of the first foods you are introducing, I suggest mixing it with a little bit of breast milk. Add the avocado and about 2 ounces of breast milk to the food processor and blend. This will be a shiny paste. This was my son's favorite baby food. He would cry every time he was done because he wanted more, so he would eat a lot more than one tablespoon of this one. Lately I haven't given him avocados but he does love them. Do the same for the banana baby food. One thing to keep in mind, bananas tend to constipate a little bit, so don't be surprised if your baby does not have a dirty diaper after giving him/her bananas. All normal. If you are concerned about this, wait to introduce bananas last.

Green Bean Baby Food

Use frozen green beans. It is so much easier to work with them and they have the same nutritional value as fresh green beans. Plus, most of the time, you can steam them in the bag, which is so much easier. Steam them until tender and add them to the food processor. Use about 2 cups of green beans and 2-4 tablespoons of water. That's it! This one is super easy!!!

Butternut Squash Baby Food

There are three ways you can do this. 1.) If you bought the whole butternut squash, you can cut it in half, and place face down on a baking sheet and bake at 375 F for 30-40 minutes or until tender. 2.) If you have already cut big chunks of butternut squash you can place them on a baking sheet and add water to the bottom of the pan and bake at 375 F for 30 minutes. 3.) If you bought the pre-cut smaller pieces of butternut squash you can boil them like you do potatoes until tender. After you've cooked the squash add to the food processor and add 2-4 tablespoons of water until you reach the desired consistency.

Sweet Potato Baby Food

Get one or two sweet potatoes, wash them and poke with a fork. Then wrap them in aluminum foil. Bake at 400 degrees for about 50 minutes or until tender. Once they are cooked and cooled, peel off the skin and cube. Add it to the food processor and blend. Add 2 tablespoons of water to reach desired consistency.

For cereals, just follow the instructions on the label. I personally do not give my son rice cereal anymore, because it constipates him, but I do feed him oatmeal cereal which he loves!

Once you've introduced these you can start mixing food, since you know your baby is not allergic to them. For example, my son loves to have his pears mixed with his oatmeal. I also give him green beans and squash together. The sky is the limit!

As you can see, it is very simple to make homemade baby food. A few of the good things about making your own baby food, you can buy organic fruits and vegetables and know that you are not feeding your baby pesticides. Fruits and vegetables are considerably cheaper than actually buying already made baby food. Lastly, you get to cook...which if you are anything like me, you enjoy it.

MOMMY BLOG: WEANING WEEK 5

Hi everyone! It's been a while since my last post!

It is with a heavy heart that I say.... THE TEETHING MONSTER IS UPON US!!!
**insert dramatic music**

Last week I made the decision of taking this weaning process a lot slower than anticipated not because my baby was refusing to wean but because mommy was having a hard time weaning herself from nursing. So, here I am, a week later, glad that I took it slower! My little on is having such a hard time lately! It is so hard to see him in pain. Last night, or should I say this morning, he woke up at 3 am and there was no amount of patting, shushing, rocking or Tylenol that could comfort him! So, I nursed him a lot today...more than usual, just because it's the only thing that can calm him. I was nursing 3 times a day last week, but today I nursed him 5 times since he was having such a bad day.

Anyways, let's talk about how it went before he started teething. This week I was going to replace a bottle for his 4 am nursing session. The first day went smoothly, he woke up, I gave him a bottle with 3 ounces of formula, he drank 2 and fell asleep. I was able to put him down on his crib and he slept till 7 am. I was doing my happy dance because it was soooo easy....and then he was like....don't start dancing just yet mommy! The next morning, I went in with his bottle and gave it to him... at 4 am... what happened? He was so awake. I could not put him down to sleep after that. I thought it was a fluke, so I did the same thing the next morning and again, fresh as a daisy at four in the morning and mommy walking half dead the rest of the day. I decided that I was just not going to give him the breast or a bottle. He is taking his normal formula bottles the rest of the day, I am now giving him 8 ounces instead of 6 since I am not feeding him at night. I know his pediatrician told us that he really doesn't need the calories at night, but still I feel like he should take a bit more during the day then.

It was all good until last night, when he started crying hysterically! Last night was one of the toughest nights we've had so far. It's incredible what lack of sleep, a crying baby and general exhaustion can do to you. Not to mention the fact that I feel so helpless when it comes to soothing him! So, after I nursed him this morning I was able to put him down to sleep again on his crib but he woke up 40 minutes later crying again. So, I gave in, and at 6:30am I brought him to our bed. I know that bed-sharing is a very controversial topic, but it works for us! We don't share our bed everyday, but on occasion if he is feeling under the weather, we give him the extra cuddles he needs/wants. After all, they are babies for such a short period of time that I just want to breathe him in, and enjoy every cuddle I can.

This will be my schedule for this week as well, and hopefully that tooth emerges in the next couple of days. Our doctor told us that once it breaks through the skin the pain and discomfort goes away! So, please keep your fingers crossed for us and say a little prayer so we all, and specially my baby boy, catch some z's. Until next week!

MOMMY BLOG: WEANING WEEK 4

Hi everyone!!

Weaning week 4, what a week it was! First, we had a holiday on Monday, which is usually when I start the new routine with my little one with exchanging a nursing session with a bottle. My hubby was at home and we just had too much going on so I didn't replace a feeding that day. Then Tuesday came and we had been snowed in so again my husband was at home and I postponed it another day. Long story short, with all the things going on with us not having a consistent routine I didn't get to replace a nursing session until Friday, and let me tell you, it was a disaster!!! I for some reason thought that I would replace the middle of the day nursing. Well, what a huge mistake that was! If you have been reading my blog regarding weaning you will know that I have already replaced the second morning feeding, and the second to last feeding. Replacing the middle of the day nursing session meant I did not nurse from 7 am until 7 pm!!! By 5 pm I was in so much pain from being engorged that I had to feed my baby at a different time than his normal schedule. Not only that, I felt so sad from all the crazy hormones that I was crying and felt weepy and overall crabby!

Because of all of this, I have made a new decision, I will wean my little one every other week from a breast milk feeding. I feel that weaning is not only for the baby but also for the mom! I never thought I would say this, but it has been harder for me than it has been for my baby! I miss staring into his eyes while he nurses and seeing him fall asleep and look at his beautiful long eyelashes! So I will take it slow! Slower than before.

At this new schedule he will be done nursing by the time he turns 9 months! Which is actually 3  months longer than I expected to nurse him when I got pregnant! Crazy how your plans change when you become a mother and experience breastfeeding!

This is his eating schedule for last week and this is his new schedule that will start this week:

Last Week Schedule:
4 am - Nurse him
7 am - Nurse him
10 am - Bottle feed him
1 pm - Nurse him
4 pm - Bottle feed him
7 pm - Nurse him

This Week Schedule:
4 am - Bottle feed him (only 2 oz since he really doesn't take that much anyways at this time)
7 am - Nurse him
10 am - Bottle feed him
1 pm - Nurse him
4 pm - Bottle feed him
7 pm - Nurse him

So there it is, this is what works for me individually. I hope that you mamma's out there have found a routine that works and if this looks like something you might like give it a try and let me know on the comments how is it going. Also, let me know what worked for you! This is a dynamic thing so I could use some pointers! Anyways, I hope you all have a lovely week and Happy Monday!!

MOMMY BLOG: WEANING WEEK 3

Hello everyone!

Weaning, week 3! I have to tell you, this week was an emotional roller coaster for me. My little one finally got better, yay, therefore I resumed my planned schedule for weaning him.

This week I replaced his second feeding of the morning, usually around 9-10am. Now he is breastfeeding 4 times a day (4am, 7am, 1pm and 7pm) and bottle feeding 2 times a day (9-10am and 4-5pm). He is drinking anything from 4 to 8 oz of formula per feeding. Four ounces if he had solids too close to his bottle feeding or 8 if it has been a couple of hours since he had solids. It all depends on his mood, since we do not have a very strict schedule for solids yet, but he is more solids now!!! There are some days that will refuse his morning cereal (this has happened the past two days, I wonder if it is that he is getting bored with it?).

Anyways, the first day I replaced a nursing session (I start the new schedules on Mondays) with a bottle this week, he fought it a little bit. I think it has to do with the fact that since it is a morning feeding, daddy is not around to give him the bottle. Every time that I am the one giving him the bottle, we have more resistance than if it is my husband Jeff. That first day he would stop drinking from the bottle and would try to latch on, so it took me around 45 minutes to give him the whole bottle. The next day he was back to his normal self and took the bottle right away.

For me it was a rather emotional week. I was very sad and weepy on Monday. I felt like I was missing something. I knew that this could happen since when a woman breastfeeds, her body releases the hormone Oxytocin, which produces calmness and sometimes it can make you sleepy. Our bodies also releases endorphins while we breastfeed which gives the mother some kind of natural high! Because of this hormonal change it is not unusual to feel a bit down when you start weaning your baby. I definitely felt it this week. By the third day I felt like my old self. This comes to show you how amazing our bodies are and that the benefits of breastfeeding are not only for the baby, but for momma as well.

I am still debating on whether I remove a breastfeeding session every week or every two weeks. Let's see how it goes this week. I will keep you posted!

Hugs,
Frances

MOMMY BLOG: WEANING - WEEK 2

Hello there again!
Here I am, Week 2 of weaning. This week was very rough for my little one! I was planning on cutting another nursing session this week, but then my boy got sick. I will wander off a little bit from the weaning subject to tell you what happened:

Off I went to take my son for his 6 month appointment, and on my way to the doctor I heard him spit up a bit. He has never been to much of a spitter, but it wasn't a whole lot so I didn't think it was a big deal. Once I got to the doctor's office, while we were waiting for the nurse to call us, he started throwing up. This was not just throwing up, noooooo, this was projectile vomiting! It looked like a scene from the exorcist! I don't know where they store so much! He drinks maybe 7oz per feeding but he threw up like 3 gallons! He managed to puke on himself, me, the nurse, the floor, the car seat, the doctor and even had some left to throw up in a little bucket they brought for him. Needless to say, I was on full on "mommy-is-about-to-freak-out mode". The doctor decided to push his 6 month old vaccines a couple of days.

With this vomiting episode, vaccines and what I think was a growth spurt, my little one was extra clingy and he just wanted to nurse all the time. I just didn't have the heart to deny him of the comfort he was so much looking for. So, I kept the weaning schedule I had for him on week 1.

I hope this comes to show you that you really have to go with the flow and sometimes things will take longer than expected. I still want to wean him but I will not force something if it seems like circumstances are not ideal. My baby boy wanted his mommy! How can you say no to that. I think that as long as we don't go backwards, if we have a delay, it will not be the end of the world.

So, on to Week 3 of weaning! I will let you know how it goes! :)

Hugs!!

MOMMY BLOG: LACTATION COOKIES

BREASTFEEDING IS HARD!

If you are here because you are looking for a good recipe for lactation cookies, first of all, lady you freaking ROCK. You are nursing a baby, and if your babe is anything like mine, who was half piranha, half baby, you deserve a MEDAL! It is not as easy as they say, and I call BS on anyone who says that it shouldn't hurt. Errrr, it hurts, A LOT!!!! Anyways, congrats on nursing your baby! Now, when I started nursing, I encountered many hurdles, and for me, breastfeeding has been the hardest thing I've ever done in my entire life! One of those hurdles was poor milk production. So, off I went to the "inter-webs" searching for a solution. And I found it! Lactation cookies. I stumbled across a website that claimed to have the best lactation cookie recipe ever so I decided to give it a try. First batch was ok, but it called for coconut oil which was a bit overwhelming for my tastebuds. After three attempts changing things a bit I reached a recipe that I absolutely love.

I ended up eating this every day in the morning and at night. They are so gooey and rich. They are perfect with a very nice cold glass of milk.

You can find the original recipe here: http://www.howsweeteats.com/2015/02/lactation-cookies/
This lady has some pretty delicious recipes and I am glad I found this recipe, even though I ended up tweaking it a bit, it's still pretty similar. So if you want to see my adaption, keep reading.

Ingredients
  • 3 cups old fashioned oats
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 5 tbsp brewers yeast (I bought mine at Amazon)
  • 5 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  •  a pinch salt
  • 16 tbsp unsalted butter, soften
  • 1 1/2 cups of sugar
  • 1 large egg + 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • On a large bowl mix oats, flour, brewers yeast, flaxseed, baking soda, baking power, cinnamon and salt.
  • With an electric mixer, mix soften butter on medium high until creamy (and pale in color). Add sugar until fluffy. Add the egg and the egg yolk until combined. Add vanilla extract and combine.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients into the bowl on low, do not over mix.
  • With a wooden spatula, stir in chocolate chips.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and scoop in the dough into 1 inch rounds, and place on baking sheet. Bake for 16 minutes, or until bottoms start to look golden.
  • Cool completely or not... YOLO! I couldn't wait so I ended up eating a couple while they were still warm! Yummy!

This recipe makes about two dozen cookies, a bit more, a bit less depending on how big you made your rounds.

For me these cookies were perfect, and within two days I was able to see that my milk production was up! I really hope this helps.

Hugs, Frances

MOMMY BLOG: WEANING - WEEK 1

Hello again! I hope you guys are doing awesome!

As many of you know, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusively breastfeeding for at least the first 6 months of life. And, they furthermore recommend to extend breastfeeding for a whole year. Last week I made the decision to wean my baby boy from breastfeeding. He just turned 6 months a couple of days ago. Let me be clear, if you are a breasfeeding mother and you have decided to breastfeed longer than 6 months, that is totally fine, and more power to you. The same goes to any of you momma's who have decided to wean before the 6 month mark or for you momma's that formula your babies. You do what's best for you and for your baby, so do not let my post make you feel like you are less than me or anything like that. This is what works for my family and for my baby. From the beginning, my son has been a very independent baby boy and lately he has no interest in sitting for 10-15 minutes to nurse. He is just such a curious and active boy that breastfeeding has become a challenge for both us.

Now, when I decided I wanted to wean him, I took to the internet, and researched many, many ways to do it. I cannot tell you how many articles are out there about the subject. It was quite overwhelming but, I decided to go the "gentle weaning" way. What does "gentle weaning" means? Basically, you just take it slow. I do not understand how any momma out there will do cold turkey on breastfeeding...hello Dolly Parton or Pamela Anderson!!! I really did not want to have my breast feel like two pounds of potatoes in a one pound bag...no offense to anyone that has done it this way. At the moment my son is feeding anything from 6 to 8 times a day, so I decided I would take from 6 to 8 weeks to wean him. So, aside from the fact that it is gentler for my ladies (boobies), I feel like I will give my son 8 months of liquid gold.

So, this week was the first week that I used formula instead of a nursing session. I chose the last evening feeding, the one before his bedtime routine/nursing (I am still nursing him to sleep).  My son has already weaned most of his nighttime feedings. He only wakes up once, although sometimes he wakes up more than once, if he is sick or has had a rough day. During these coming weeks I will work on gently weaning him from those too, but not replacing them with a feeding, since our pediatrician said he really doesn't need to nurse at night, he is mostly comfort nursing.

So far so good. It went smoothly, and he seems to enjoy Daddy giving him a bottle and some extra cuddles while I do some work around the house. I haven't felt engorged or anything, which is good, since I am really scared of it. (I've only been engorged once, at one of my best girlfriends wedding, were I had to hand express milk, since I forgot my pump and could not handle the pain). What I have noticed is that I am missing it more than my son is. In my opinion, weaning is tougher on the mom than on the baby. I felt weepy, and get quite sad about the future and not nursing him, but I know that the bonding we have created will not vanish just because I am not nursing him. He still needs mommy for nourishment and cuddles, even if I am not giving him the breast. Next week I will give up the second morning feeding (the feeding after his wakeup nursing session) Bedtime feeding and wakeup feeding will be the last ones to go. I will see you next week for a Weaning - Week 2 update.

Hugs, Frances

BECOMING A MOTHER

MOMMY BLOG: BECOMING A MOTHER

This year I started the most exciting and nerve-raking "job" of my life, and my new "boss" calls me mommy! Yes, this year I became a mom! Follow me on this journey called parenthood. I will try to share my experiences and some little advise I wish I knew when I had my beautiful baby boy! Stay tuned!
